Police at CBGB's...
The Police is a driving British hard rock combo in its first American Tour. Despite one number with jazz influences, most of the turn is solid rock.
Group, formed about 20 months ago, is fronted by a first rate lead singer, who goes under the name of Sting, whose real name is Gordon Sumner. Sting, an excellent bass guitarist, proved inventive in the set I caught. When Andy Summers, the trio's topnotch lead guitarist, was repairing a broken string, Sting gave fun a cappella versions of 'Yellow Rose Of Texas' and 'Secret Love'.
Andy Summers, who often backs vocally, has an a cappella seg in 'Be My Girl', a set high spot. Stewart Copeland, also a former member of Curved Air and backup vocalist for the all-blonde unit, is steady on drums. The Police, whose first US album is due on A&M, rate attention in the high decibel, heavy rock field.
