'The Last Ship' Musical to Dock in Scandinavia...

June 03, 2015

"The Last Ship" is sailing to Scandinavia.

The show, with music and lyrics by Sting, will be produced in Norway, Sweden and Finland over the next two years, according to a spokesman. Sting is in talks about possible productions in his native United Kingdom, as well as in Germany and Eastern Europe, the spokesman said.

The musical had a brief, and financially unsuccessful, run on Broadway last season, but Sting has been a relentless champion of the show. He joined the cast for a time to help bolster ticket sales, and since its closing he has been promoting the music and seeking new productions.

"Working on 'The Last Ship' has been pure joy for me, and of course it is in the nature of ships that they move around the world, so I'm looking forward to our proud ship finding many a new berth sailing in international waters," Sting, who wrote the show in part to reflect the struggles of the British shipbuilding community he grew up in, said in an email statement.

Rick Miramontez, a spokesman for Sting, said "The Last Ship" would play in Oslo in 2016 and in Stockholm and Helsinki in 2017, with the productions presided over by the performing rights agency Nordiska. He said that in each country the musical would be performed in the local language.

The show opened on Broadway last October and closed in January. It grossed $11,156,284 in 29 previews and 105 post-opening performances. It has been nominated for two Tony Awards, for score and orchestrations.

It's great to see that you're bringing The Last Ship sailing to my neck o' the woods in Sweden! Please consider doing it in English, though :) Or I'll just fly to London instead when you sail there!

Geordie pride ...
I was privileged to hear Sting and his superb support artists play and sing the songs from the Last Ship at the Sage - the music reflects the history and emotions of the people of the region and it will resonate with me and others for ever. I regret not going to New York to see the play - I hope Sting decides to bring the play to Newcastle. So Sting you self styled man of vision - why don't you construct a temporary venue in Wallsend on the banks of the Tyne within one of the remaining dry docks and see that Last Ship sale in real splendor - I can guarantee that people will flock from far and wide to bare witness to an event like that - what a positive impact this would have on you home town ... think about it ... it's all possible. Otherwise - I'll just have learn Norwegian and sing along with our Viking cousins - they say that some of the Geordie lingo comes from Scandinavia so I shouldn't have any problem with the language ... lol. Bring the Last Ship home to the UK!
I always felt like the show should have started out in London's west end, it would be amazing to have the opportunity to see in, here's hoping, fingers and toes crossed...
