Sting Scores First Adult Alternative Songs Chart Hit in 12 Years...

September 17, 2016

The former Police frontman's new single "I Can't Stop Thinking About You" starts at No. 19, marking his first visit to the tally since 2004.

Sting makes his first appearance in 12 years on Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs radio airplay chart with "I Can't Stop Thinking About You," the lead single from his Nov. 11 album 57th & 9th, his first rock-focused set since 2003's Sacred Love.

The track debuts on the Sept. 24 chart at No. 19, marking the former frontman of The Police's first Adult Alternative Songs entry since "Stolen Car (Take Me Dancing)" (featuring rapper Twista), which reached No. 14 in July 2004.

Los Angeles' KCSN led format reporters with 26 plays for "Stop" in the tracking week ending Sept. 11, according to Nielsen Music, after the market's alternative KROQ premiered it Aug. 31.

Sting has one Adult Alternative Songs No. 1 to his name: the four-week leader "Desert Rose" in 2000. (The chart began in January 1996.)

It was nearly a doubly great week on Adult Alternative Songs for the Sumner family, as Sting's child Eliot Sumner nears the tally with "After Dark." If "After Dark" makes the ranking, it will mark the 26-year-old's first song to reach a Billboard airplay chart. Both Sting and Sumner's songs were released on Interscope Records.

"Stop" additionally starts at No. 35 on Hot Rock Songs (which blends airplay, sales and streaming data), also sparked by 413,000 U.S. streams and 3,000 downloads sold. (It's Sting's first appearance on the chart, which began in 2009.)
