Embrace the new, go beyond the well-trodden paths: The Dresdner Musikfestspiele ventures into a visionary year of discovery with the motto "HORIZONS." In the 47th festival season from May 9 to June 9, 2024, Director Jan Vogler invites us to broaden our horizons and presents a program of 60 events, which will allow the diverse musical world to blossom in 21 venues in and around Dresden.

Rock icon Sting and his band will play some of his greatest hits in the Dresden Messe on 25 May. And with Laufey, the festival welcomes a newcomer for her Dresden debut, who manages to reignite a love for sentimental jazz music with young audiences. A new format will be "The Night of the Young Stars," where renowned mentors, such as Till Bronner, Sarah Willis, and Martin Grubinger, invite the next generation of musicians onto the stage. The opening concert with the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest & Klaus Makela, as well as the final event with the Czech Philharmonic & Jakub Hréisa form the world-class classical framework for 32 lively festival days.

"The public reception of classical music is changing. This could be the biggest transformation in almost one hundred years. We let ourselves be inspired by this and explore new horizons together with ourfantastic audience in 2024. I am looking forward to one of the most colorful years since the festival’s foundation," says Jan Vogler, Director of the Dresdner Musikfestspiele.

With 25 debuts and a total of four world premieres, the 2024 Dresdner Musikfestspiele once again proves to be a festival of immense innovative appeal. The continuation of "The Wagner Cycles", which launched earlier this year with Richard Wagner’s "Das Rheingold", further bears witness to this. Now follows the second part of this grand-scale dialogue between art and science with the concert production of "Die Walkure" clad in the historical sound of Wagner's time with the Dresdner Festspielorchester and Concerto K6ln under the baton of Kent Nagano.

The Dresden-based electro-pop duo Atna will, for the first time, put together a program with the Dresdner Kapellsolisten. With Daniel Hope (violin) and Jan Vogler (cello),two outstanding soloists and artistic directors from Dresden will perform with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin under Anna Rakitina at the Frauenkirche. Further broaden the musical horizon in the coming year will world renowned musicians and orchestras, such as the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra under Manfred Honeck with Daniel Lozakovich (violin), Elena Urioste & Chineke! Orchestra, Philippe Herreweghe and the Collegium Vocale Gent as well as Abel Selaooe & Bantu Ensemble, Stacey Kent (jazz singer), Igor Levit (piano), Jane Monheit (jazz singer), Jeanine De Bique (soprano) and Anoushka Shankar (sitar).

It contributes significantly to the reputation of Saxony as a cultural hub. And so, it is with pleasure that the Ministry of Culture supports the festival with funds from the state budget in 2024. With the new program, Jan Vogler has again invited celebrated artists of international standing to Dresden and will attract tens of thousands ofguests from around the world to Dresden and Saxony once more. And therefore, the Dresdner Musikfestspiele is not only an exceptional cultural event, but also an major tourism attraction for the state of Saxony," says Barbara Klepsch, Saxon State Minister for Culture and Tourism.

When Synth-pop meets chamber music on the stage and different characters from German mythology encounter pop icons, the city’s festival enriches the city of music Dresden. The Dresdner Musikfestspiele is an institution of the State Capital of Dresden. It is funded by the Saxon State Ministry of Science, Culture, and Tourism and financed in part on the basis of the budget passed by the State Parliament of Saxony.

The 47th Dresden Music Festival takes place from May 9 to June 9, 2024.
